I did this project right as the leaves were changing outside, and it’s a good short transition project because it only takes a block to do.
- We start by looking at the differences between warm and cool colors and what those colors are associated with, then look at some leaf shapes. We talk about the types of trees we have in our region and why they start to change.
- I hand out some warm color crayons and a example sheet of leaf shapes and the kids start to draw some leaves. (I think this could be added on by talking about movement and how we show that in art so maybe they could also add some movement lines to show the leaves falling, not just floating in space.)
- I then hand out palettes of warm and cool toned watercolor/tempera cakes and the paint the inside of the leaves warm colors, and the negative space cool colors. They end up blending a lot of the colors but the crayon can help separate the warm leaves from the cool background.
- Dry and then it’s done!
