Mixed Media Alphabet Soup

This project uses a lot of materials and is so fun, first and second graders loved.

  • We start out by talking about what “media” means in art, and how mixed media is when we use multiple mediums to make one piece of art. We look at some mixed media pieces as well.
  • For our project we start out with filling in a circle with crayon letters. This part is super fun because I show the kids how the yellow paint we use later can make secret letters appear if they use white to write, and how they can put their names in their soup. The kids go wild writing secret messages and hide the letters of the names in the soup.
  • Next class we paint the broth using yellow watercolor and then place on the drying rack.
  • We then look at different patterns we see on table cloths, plaid and gingham and the likes. They each got a large piece of yellow paper and different medium for each class because I couldn’t make up my mind. I found that they were too rough with the dot tools, markers were too small and paint sticks, my favorite material, were perfect. They made their own plaid-like patterns all over their papers.
  • The next class we put everything together. We cut out white circles of the bowls, and used the scraps to make napkins with spoons on them. We glued everything down and were left with sweet little placemats of soups.
